Mending & Darning

Our next workshop will be Tuesday, January 31th at 6:00 pm. Maben Hart will be sharing techniques and instruction on repairing worn clothing, backpacks, and other fabric goods. We will learn about a variety of different methods, including darning and stitching.

Maben Hart holds a BFA in apparel design. She has been active in the Portland volunteer community for the last decade, educating on the environmental impact and humanitarian injustices tied to the apparel industry and empowering individuals to engage in repair culture by leading skill shares and repair cafes.

Workshop Summary
Kimi Feuer will be demonstrating tools and techniques for sharpening and honing blades and tool tips. Tools will be provided to sharpen, and you will leave with the skills you need to restore any damaged or worn edge back to working condition.

SOldering Basics

Learn to repair loose wires, mend circuits, and restore functionality to your tools, toys, and small appliances. Led by our partners and friends at Repair PDX, this workshop will be held at the Green Lents Community Tool Library.

Planting cover crops & Garlic

Workshop Summary
Gabi Villaseñor from Growing Gardens will be presenting on cover crops for soil restoration and preservation as well as planting garlic for spring harvest. Additional cold-weather crops will be discussed.

Afterwards, we will walk down the street to our temporary garden education space for a live demonstration of techniques. Members will be invited to borrow tools after the workshop for weekend planting and cover cropping.

A gardening book raffle will also be held during the event.

Late Spring 2023
Seed Saving

Free to all! Masks optional.

Reservations and sign-up are not required, but requested for anonymous grant reporting statistics. We will also send you updates of the event is cancelled or changed. If you do not fill out registration, you will be asked to fill out a Liability Waiver and Media Release at the workshop.

Nick Canino from Rhythm Seed Farm will be sharing tips on winter proofing your garden and demonstrating seed saving/cleaning techniques. We will learn about a variety of different types of seeds and methods for cleaning them and get busy using seed screens and other tools for cleaning, including good, old fashioned wind.

​Everyone will be invited to take seeds home from the workshop and our seed library!

Rhythm Seed Farm produces regionally adapted seeds using organic regenerative practices. Their farm site is located on a quarter acre plot in the Cully neighborhood of Portland, OR, amongst the traditional territory of many Chinookan peoples, and we join them in acknowledging and giving thanks to the original caretakers of this beautiful land.
