We are working together to stabilize existing residents of Lents, and ensure that the city, developers, and community groups are doing everything we can to prevent displacement. The Lents Strong Housing Team relies on the experience of impacted Lents community members to direct our advocacy. Our team is mostly people of color, renters, and transit-dependent residents who are impacted by rising housing costs. Lents has already seen massive increases in rents and home prices, pushing people out of the neighborhood. We must act now if we hope to make Lents a home for all our neighbors.
The Lents Strong Housing Team is unique in that it is composed of people who are the most impacted by unaffordable housing in Lents. In early 2018, we worked to formally train people in advocacy & organizing skills. We have team members who have experienced displacement, those who fear their own displacement, and those who grew up here and are concerned about how Lents is changing. This project is self-determined by our team members. Green Lents and ROSE Community Development are acting as facilitators as our team has developed and pursued our advocacy priorities.
Our top priorities are:
1) Ensure Transparent, Accountable Development (With a focus on the 92nd & Harold site)
2) Pursue Government Action on Anti-Displacement Policies
3) Respond Compassionately to the Houselessness Crisis in Lents
