Community Tool Library Workshop and Activity Calendar – August/September

Want to know what is going on at the Community Tool Library?

Hope to see you there!

Community Tool Library Wish List

The Community Tool Library has lots of new shelving with lots of donated tools – but there are still several things that members have asked for that we’d like to add to our inventory.  You can help by donating something on the list to the Library, or underwriting the cost of a new tool.  In either case, your donation is tax deductible.

For a complete list of what we would like to add to the Tool Library, download The Wish List.

Drink Coffee – Help Support Green Lents

Geen Lents is happy to announce the beginning of an affiliation with a local startup – Anglefire Coffee Roasters – that will generate income to support our organization.

By trading directly with small farmers, many who previously produced opium, and paying them more than twice fair trade prices Angelfire Coffee Roasters is committed to helping growers get their fair share.  And they are committed to helping the environment too (from their website):

The coffee roasting industry has a large carbon footprint.  Two thirds of all carbon emissions from coffee roasting is due to a method of smoke mitigation called afterburning which uses a gas fired furnace to burn off particulate matter in the smoke output. Angelfire Coffee Roasters is using a newer technique borrowed from the coal burning industry called wet scrubbing.  It uses a fine water mist to pull larger particulate matter from the exhaust followed by electrostatic precipitation.  This method uses a negligible amount of energy and is a highly effective method of smoke reduction while cutting the carbon footprint of coffee roasters by almost 70 percent.  And to the best of our knowledge, the Angelfire roaster is the only coffee roasting operation that is 100 percent powered by renewable zero carbon footprint electricity derived from solely from wind and hydroelectric.  In addition, all coffee we sell is packaged in biodegradable and compostable packaging.

And even better, Angelfire is distributing 75 percent of all profits to local  nonprofit organizations to benefit our local community – and GREEN LENTS is now a designated recipient of this generosity.   So, go to their online store at http://www.angelfirecoffee.com/, click on the Green Lents icon, order some coffee and about $3 of every bag you purchase will come back to Green Lents.  Coffee will be delivered to the Community Tool Library for you to pick up.

Johnson Creek Cleanup – 2013

Join Green Lents, the Overland Park Neighborhood Coalition, and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council on Saturday, August 24, from 8 AM – 12 Noon for the annual Johnson Creek Clean-Up. This event is a chance to get in the water of Johnson Creek and make a direct positive impact by removing trash from the creek.  In the past 5 years, over 500 volunteers have removed approximately 15 tons of trash from the creek!

Volunteers will walk in Johnson Creek to remove trash from designated stream segments. Each stream segment will have a designated Team Captain who will help guide the activities. Participants will need to bring a water bottle and wear shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting wet and dirty. Some teams will stay dry removing littler from various park grounds nearby.

Following the event, all volunteers are welcome to join in a BBQ hosted by the Overland Park Coalition from 12-2 PM.

Neighborhood Nature Extravaganza

Green Lents is hosting the Neighborhood Nature Extravaganza in partnership with the Audubon Society of Portland and Groundwork Portland. The event will take place Saturday, August 10th, from 4pm to 8pm, near 104th and Yukon (exact location TBD).

If you are interested in celebrating your neighborhood with food (FREE BBQ!), music, education birds, and other learning opportunities, do not miss this event!

The Neighborhood Nature Extravaganza is for those looking to get involved, or simply explore and learn. There will be opportunities to gather information concerning green streets on your block, improving your backyard habitat to support pollinators, enhancing a local green space for people and wildlife, and more.

Our goal is to get YOU excited and involved in green initiatives forming in your neighborhood because together WE can make an impact!

Contractor Q & A – June 22

If you are contemplating a ‘project’ around your house or property – chances are you have some questions that a licensed contractor could answer.

If your project happens to be related to heating or cooling your home then you want to come to the Community Tool Library on Saturday June 22, from 10 – noon and talk with Steve Jones from Chase Heating Company.

Steve has experience in other trades as well, and can offer general advice on:

  • How to find a contractor
  • Checking a contractor’s license
