SEED Library

A seed is a map. A blueprint. A time capsule. A story.
A seed is a mystery we hold in our palms and count out every spring.
Planting each one is a small act of hope.

Come exchange seeds at the tool LIbrary!
Open during regular tool library hours (Currently Saturdays 10am-1pm)

Early this spring, as the Green Lents Community Tool Library prepared to re-open its doors, we decided to revive our dusty and dormant Seed Library. We bought new seeds, re-packaged and labeled seeds donated from neighbor gardens, put the call out for more and for garden starts, and started the swapping! We are listening to your needs and concerns, and working to find solutions, especially for those living in apartments, residents with no access to little to no garden space, and those at-risk neighbors who might not be able to make it into the Tool Library to access the Seed Library.

We are now sourcing seeds for fall planting and saving and packaging for next spring! Stay tuned for updates and info on how to save seeds for yourself and for donation (including ready-to-print labels), seasonal planting guides and tips, community partner and website resources, and tales from your gardens (successes, failures, lessons learned). In the Pacific Northwest, we have a bonus growing season – Autumn!
We currently have for you:
  • Kale
  • Chard
  • Spinach
  • Peas (it’s not too late)
  • Mustard & lettuce greens
  • Cover-crop (peas & oats, and fava beans)

Donations accepted for:
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Kale
  • Chard
  • Any organic/non-gmo vegetable and pollinator-flower seed packed for 2020, leftover from your spring/summer planting
  • Any organic/non-gmo vegetable and pollinator-flower seed saved from your 2020 garden for 2021 spring planting

Besides gardening tools and seeds, we also have a rich gardening lending library, and as always, welcome your book donations!

The desire of Lents residents to grow their own food is strong, now six months into a global pandemic. Our food-desert reality sheds a stark light on the food insecurity and food injustices so many neighbors have, and continue to face – we hope that the seed library will help all of us on the road to self-sufficiency and community resilience. Food sovereignty means no one will go hungry. Like a message sent in a bottle to our future selves, when we save seeds, we get to write our own story.
