Saturday, May 4th 2013: Seed and plant swap!

• Bring your left-over seeds and unwanted plants to trade with your neighbors! Knowledgeable gardeners will be available for any questions about your garden.

Saturday, May 11th 2013: Recycling Roundup!

• Bring your non-curb recyclables to the Community Tool Library for disposal. Bring in: light bulbs, batteries, Styrofoam/packing peanuts, paint/household cleaners.

Saturday, May 18th 2013: Green Street Steward Workshop.

• Learn about the Green Street facilities in the area and their purpose in the watershed.  Learn about the plants and maintenance. Option to head out and weed/prune a few facilities to get your hands dirty!

Saturday, May 25th 2013: Going Solar at Home.

• Meet Sean Patrick from local company Million Monarchs will be available from 9am-12pm to answer questions and provide resources for people that want more information about installing solar panels on their home.

On Saturday April 6th from 9 – Noon at the Community Tool Library (9215 SE Ramona ST.), Green Lents has arranged for an expert tool sharpener and able apprentices to sharpen your garden tools, including:

• Lopers
• Pruning shearers
• Shovels
• Hoes
• Lawnmower blades (remove blade first)
• Miscellaneous hand tools

A suggested donation of $5-20 per tool will go towards operations of the Community Tool Library.

Please RSVP to librarian@greenlents.org so we have an idea of how many tools to expect. Sharpening will be on a first come basis, and tools per individual may be limited based on overall demand.

If you would like to volunteer to help, here are the details.

WHEN:  this Saturday, Jan. 12th from 8:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Pilgrim Lutheran Church 4244 Southeast 91st Avenue Portland, OR 97266 (map) — look for the Friends of Trees signs.
TIMING:  Please arrive by 8:45 a.mm to register and be assigned to a planting crew — the event starts promptly at 9:00 a.m.
WHAT:  Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes/rubber boots.  We’ll provide the gloves, tools and trained volunteer guidance.  There will also be coffee and breakfast treats to get you fueled up as well as a potluck lunch after the planting is finished at the church provided to all volunteers by the hosting neighborhood groups!

Dust off your boots, grab a shovel, and get your hands dirty planting trees along a stretch of Johnson Creek that is without native trees and shrubs. Native trees will provide shade improving water quality and enhance the stream corridor for wildlife.

These are family-friendly events on  Saturday mornings from 9 am – 1 pm, rain or shine. All tools, gloves and supplies will be provided.

What is more fun than singing karaoke?  Making your friends sing karaoke of your choice at the best new bar in Lents!

Join Green Lents at the Eagle Eye Tavern, 5836 SE 92nd, as we bring the first ever Ransom Karaoke to our neighborhood on December 7, for a night of fun, singing, and dancing – and raising money for Green Lents and our programs like the Community Tool Library and Watershed Health Project.

Our host, Cartlandia (SE 82nd and  Springwater Corridor Bike Trail), opened up their back lot for our artists and garage sale items, as well as promoting the Upcycle Fair through email, radio and social media.

The Upcycle Fair made some neighborhood news too!  The East PDX News wrote an upbeat article on the event (click here to read the article; photo at left courtesy of East PDX News).  Another neighborhood news source, Foster United, wrote a brief synopsis of the event along with some fun pictures of the event (click here to read the article)!

Look for the next Upcycle Fair in 2013!

If you didn’t use all your flower or vegetable seeds this year, or have harvested extra seeds from your garden produce, Green Lents has started a Seed Library and is looking for donations.  Next spring, Community Tool Library members will be able to ‘borrow’ seeds from the library to plant in your own garden, and hopefully ‘return’ some extra seeds you’ve bought or harvested and didn’t use to share with others.

The Seed Library is located next to the Book Library in the Community Tool Library.

Please bring your seeds in their original packet or a small paper envelope with the name of the plant and year purchased written on the envelope.  DO NOT store seeds in plastic bags.

You can access the Seed Library anytime the Tool Library (located at 9211 SE Ramona Street) is open: Wednesdays 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; Saturdays 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Sundays 12:00 – 4:00 p.m.
